Kuntal Joisher combines the distinction of being an avid and a passionate mountaineer as well as a high end computer science and engineering professional. Alumni of Vivekanand Institute of Technology – Mumbai, and USC Viterbi School of Engineering Los Angeles, today he juggles his career as a Software Engineer, and his passion for mountain exploration, having climbed to the summit Mt. Everest, and Mt. Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world. Joisher is also the first Indian Gujarati to stand on the very top of Mt. Everest.
Kuntal Joisher is the first vegan who successfully climbed Everest according to Veg-News he is the first vegan to have done so. He reached the summit on 19 May 2016.Joisher was born in a vegetarian family in Mumbai, and became vegan in 2002. Joisher first went to Nepal in 1984 as a child and returned to Nepal several times for photography and climbing and says he regards Nepal as his “second home”. Surviving an almost fatal avalanche in 2015 during the 2015 Nepal earthquake, Joisher on his return to Mumbai arranged a photo exhibition and donated income he made from it to relief measures in Nepal.He says regarding his expedition, “it was important for me to send a message across the world that vegans can do it. I wanted to debunk every single myth around veganism.”
Joisher is also an accomplished photographer and many of his photographs have been published in National Geographic, Flickr Explore, BBC Earth, Space.com, EarthSky, Himalayan Journal, Outdoor Journal, and the Indian Mountaineer magazine.
Joisher is passionate about two causes – a) raise awareness about the disease of Dementia, and b) spread the message of Veganism and Vegetarianism, and prove to everyone that vegetarians are not weak and can achieve success in all fields including mountain climbing. Joisher was recently honored with awards of Kutch Shakti, Kutch Ratna and Kutch Kohinoor.
He continues to focus on his goal along with a serious fitness training regime to climb the 14 tallest 8000 meter mountains in the world and become the first Indian to do so and also join a rare group of handful mountaineers in the entire world who have achieved the feat
